Achilles?
Sinbad
Right, so The Great White has eaten through most of the tread on her tyres (bet you didn't know female sharks were super badass  ) and the skidpan convinced me that what is left is actually not enough to be safe.

Someone I respect greatly has recommended I put some Achilles 2233s on. They're extremely cheap - under R1k a tyre each in 225/40 ZR 18.
Usually I believe you get what you pay for, but my experience with the Hankooks has broadened my views a bit...

So has anyone tried these? Any opinions?

Achilles tires are imported by Yokohama South Africa. I trust the brand.

the hankooks are better ..
but he archillies and fine for everyday driving(and last longer)
..not so good in the wet or high speed cornering.... i have them on my S3... quattro helps alot.. but on a fwd with over 300hp its gona be average .

rather spend alittle more and get "yoko s drives", probably r200 more per tyre.

For R200 more I'd go with the hankooks- known quantity Wink

I'm gonna get two achilles and stick em on the front. If they're not lekker, I'll move them to the back and buy something else for the front (I need 4 new tyres). If they're ok, I'll just buy another 2.

I have the Achilles ATR's on my car and i have had no problem with them in corners , the wet , etc.
They also last a blady long time. Its an excellent tyre all round and i will use them again for sure.
Plus they are very well priced.

i have the atr fitted on my s3..in fact it was on my old s3 and they still have over 80% life..and thats with hard to average driving.

the handling when pushed "HARD" is not as good as hankooks... and the Sdrives are better than the hankooks .. i have driven them on a 265kws leon cupra which had hankooks and sdrives, i can vouch for the difference..

the only down side with the yoko and hankook is the life span...very bad around 10000Kms max any thing more then you are driving like a granny.

I have Achilles on my car. No problems with them. Done 2 track days and they are still in good nick. Dont have too much of a problem with them in the wet, just cant use throttle that much, but thats not the tyres fault B)

Yup +1 Stig...

I currently have the ATR's on my LFR in front and Toyo Proxies on the back...

Good combination but don't trust the ATR's in high speed cornering, I almost clipped a curb Yesterday because of it.. if I didn't tap off and let the ESP take over, I would have a bent rim today and or maybe a broken control arm.... Or what ever it is.

Im actually fitting 2 S Drives this weekend.

Considering that my average speed everyday is around 50km/h due to traffic , and then when hitting the highway average speed is 110 to 120 km/h i see no point in spending loads of money on expensive tyres when the Achilles ATR's can do the same job.

Why would anyone want to empty their bank account on expensive tyre such as Michelin,Bridgestone,Pirelli's etc when one can go buy a tyre that is affordable and does the same job.

If you hit a big enough pot hole no tyre will survive. If there's oil on the road no tyre will stop you.

Achilles are rated for 250 km/h ......fug me where the hell will ever do these speeds, im lucky to do 140 km/h with all the camera's and stinky Metro lurking behind bushes and bridges waiting for me to break the speed limit.

Achilles FTW .

Very True Silva..... But would you feel the same when you climb a pavement with the ATR's after you couldn't get grip around a circle...

Lol how fast must one go through a traffic circle , i always thought it was to slow cars downThinking

In your situation i blame tow truck drivers for throwing oil around the traffic circle to make you skid off the road or some crappy truck spewing diesel while going around the circle, to many variations at play hereDunno

I have hurt my ATR's a few times at drags and some spirited driving and i can say that the ATR's handle just as well as my Yokohama A drives did , and the crappy Continental's i had on my Focus ST.

When i see corners i slow down since the time i wrote off my Opel Kadett GSI 16V when i was a lightie on Republic road. I had Michelins on they did'nt work for meRofl but in my case and in most drivers its driver error.

Damn i should be the company spokesman for Achilles tyre's:D

Hahahaha i dont blame you , i blame Bevan Bertholt and ex class b Nissan racing driver back in the 1990's for scaring the shit out of me in his race car and being chased by the popo at the same time in the streets of Joburg.

Since that night my rush for speed died instantlyPray
