GPS - what do you use
Michael Scholtz
I am trying to figure out what people are using for their GPS solutions.

I have a garmin quest but its long in the tooth and the speaker is separate and broken. a new one is as much as a new GPS. (ouch)

I have since been using Garmin on my nokia and its been livable.

I want to know what most other people are using and what they prefer.

Particular questions are what brand and model of dedicated GPS are you using, and if using your cell phone what cell phone and what solution.

Let me state from the start that the telmap solution offered by vodacom on the Blackberry is possibly the worst solution I have ever tried to make work.

Another question is what are people with iPhone using?

I will keep an eye on this and post a poll once I have enough info to make it informative.

From my side Garmin 215Widescreen has been working perfect for me!
Built in bluetooth so pick up all my phone calls from there.
Also, if you go onto the garmap website you can update your Points Of Interest and add some perminent camera's & hotspots where pigs usually trap so its useful in that sense as well :)

Currently I use a "hacked" version of google maps called brut mod on my HTC desire. It basically just enables navigation for countries outside US/UK which google hasn't done yet. Works perfectly, GPS generally gets a signal pretty quickly because android phones always kinda know where they are from triangulation of the tower signals etc.

Before that I used Tomtom mobile on my nokia E65 and a bluetooth GPS receiver. I compared this "head to head" with a garmin 710 and it seemed to still be better than the garmin. The bluetooth GPS receiver got a signal much quicker than the garmin, I suspect because the whole thing is practically a receiver and it's angled better than a built in one on the back of a gps.

I wouldn't mind getting one of those new tomtom ones with the traffic avoidance...

Fo Sho! My TomTom GO 750 Live came to the rescue that day :P.. TomTom Live services are something else; It takes navigation to another level especially Live Traffic. Prior to my upgrade to the GO 750 Live I used a TomTom One 3rd Edition for about two years until I gave that gps to the vrou because she bought a car and needed gps. Live is Brilliant but if you feel you not going to use all the services then check out the TomTom One or Garmin Nuvi. All good.B)

If you not necessarily looking for a stand alone gps (application specific device) then yup by all means check out the android enabled phones, they are brilliant (because of optimised processing ability) in converting the RBS/BSC GPS Co-ords to give you an accurate reading of where you are via reception.

The TomTom Live Services (HD Traffic) works in a similar way using anonymous cellphone data to detect traffic density along routes and hence estimating delays in blerry well.

NB: Stay away from the TomTom Start ZA what what...its so entry level, it'l make you never want to venture out of your house again!!!Angry
